The thesis investigates some aspects of dynamical symmetries in quantum mechanics. In some physical systems, it is possible to transform a continuous "global" symmetry into a "gauge" symmetry, provided that the symmetry parameter is a function of time rather than a constant, and by coupling the system to an external gauge potential. In some quantum systems, this "gauging" procedure and the corresponding coupling to an external potential can lead to breaking other continuous or discrete symmetries of the system. This phenomenon has been mainly studied in the field of quantum field theories, where it is known as the 't Hooft anomaly. The thesis aims to show, through the study of a concrete example, how 't Hooft anomalies are possible even in non-relativistic quantum mechanics, and to describe the relationship between these anomalies and the presence of projective representations of the symmetry group.

Abstract
The thesis aims to show, through the study of a concrete example, how 't Hooft anomalies are possible even in non-relativistic quantum mechanics, and to describe the relationship between these anomalies and the presence of projective representations of the symmetry group.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
