Several researches attest the presence of alterations of cognitive functions in patients affected by Alzheimer's disease and Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI). The contribution of the present thesis consists of a literature review and a meta-analysis (ALE). The assignment required the analysis of fMRI studies in which such patients and healthy controls perform cognitive tasks, paying attention to possible differences in the brain activity between the two groups. The results of the meta-analysis highlight a reduced activation in the insula and in the inferior frontal gyrus in the left hemisphere of the patients. In agreement with previous evidence in the literature, the reduced involvement of these regions seems to be associated with deficits in the memory retrieval of verbal information and in language processing.

Abstract
Several researches attest the presence of alterations of cognitive functions in patients affected by Alzheimer's disease and Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI). The contribution of the present thesis consists of a literature review and a meta-analysis (ALE). The assignment required the analysis of fMRI studies in which such patients and healthy controls perform cognitive tasks, paying attention to possible differences in the brain activity between the two groups. The results of the meta-analysis highlight a reduced activation in the insula and in the inferior frontal gyrus in the left hemisphere of the patients. In agreement with previous evidence in the literature, the reduced involvement of these regions seems to be associated with deficits in the memory retrieval of verbal information and in language processing.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
