The management of livestock through innovative precision livestock farming (PLF) tools is increasingly widespread in dairy cattle, which use advanced technologies to monitor and manage animal health and productivity of the animals. The goal is to optimize productivity, improve animal welfare, and reduce the enviromental impact of the livestock sector. Among the various PLF system, we highlight the presence of ruminal boluses, which have become increasingly widespraed in recent year. This type of sensor is non-invasive and allows the monitoring of various physiological parameters of cows and enviromental conditions. Boluses are used to optimize animal nutrition, monitor health and animal welfare, and support the farmer in livestock management. In this study, SmaXtec classic bolus (SmaXtec Animal Care GmbH, Graz, Austria) have been used on 45 lactating cows from a farm in the province of Cremona in a period between June 2023 and February 2024. The aim of this study is to analyse the effects of sources of variation on the variables measured and estimated by the boluses, which include temperature, rumen index, activity, heat index, and water intake. The variables are associated with several factors such as the month/season of the year, production level, parity, and stage of lactation. The results obtained, following statistical analysis, showed a significant influence of the month/season of the year on the measured parameters, as well as the level of milk production. However, this study was not sufficient to definitively understand the physiological mechanisms controlling the causes of variation in the variables studied. There is a need to conduct and further explore additional studies on these topics in the coming years.
