The presence of racial prejudice is still prevalent in today's society, despite the progress that has been made over time. The research is focused on analysing the causes and mechanisms that are at the origin and especially the maintenance of these prejudices. In these analyses, the researchers paid particular attention to the development of these cognitive biases related to racism in children: It has been observed that the mechanisms linked to the perception of different ethnic groups develop already from the first months after the birth of children. These skills are fundamental to the development of the ethnic identity of children but, at the same time, can lead to models of negative categorization based on the ethnicity of others and consequently to processes of racial discrimination. The presence and study of these perceptual mechanisms has allowed the development of methodologies aimed at raising children’s awareness of issues related to ethnicity and ethnic identity through a gradual socialization on the subject. Despite the various complications inherent in the discussion of these issues with children, the results of this research have shown that parents and other reference figures, such as teachers, play a key role in the development and refinement of cognitive mechanisms that allow the correct interpretation of ethnic concepts, in such a way as to prevent the occurrence of racial bias and promote proper cognitive and social development of children.

Abstract
Despite the various complications inherent in the discussion of these issues with children, the results of this research have shown that parents and other reference figures, such as teachers, play a key role in the development and refinement of cognitive mechanisms that allow the correct interpretation of ethnic concepts, in such a way as to prevent the occurrence of racial bias and promote proper cognitive and social development of children.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
