Cosmetic products are formulated using various components, each with a specific function, among which active ingredients, preservatives, emulsifiers, and rheological modifiers are of relevance. The latter are crucial to provide the product with a texture suitable for application on the skin and improve its spreadability. Emulsifiers, on the other hand, can create a stable interface between immiscible oily and aqueous phases, ensuring homogeneity of the formulation. Currently, non-biodegradable synthetic polyacrylate polymers are frequently used for these roles. However, the rising attention for sustainable cosmetic formulation has led to significant interest in developing effective biodegradable substitutes for these components. The aim of this thesis project was therefore to synthetize a biodegradable rheological modifier from a plant-based source, using a polysaccharide already employed in various industrial fields. To achieve this goal, the polysaccharide was chemically modified to enhance its rheological, thickening and emulsifying properties.

Abstract
To achieve this goal, the polysaccharide was chemically modified to enhance its rheological, thickening and emulsifying properties.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
