The aim of this thesis is to analyze the relationship between poverty and psychological distress. Special attention is given to the risk factors associated with economic disadvantage, which lead to internalizing and externalizing behaviors and compromise proper neurodevelopment. Through a narrative review of the scientific literature, the concept of poverty and its impact on the individual’s life across various stages of development, starting from the prenatal phase, is explored. The data examined highlight a strong correlation between economic hardship and psychological distress, emphasizing the vicious cycle that connects them. The studies presented show a series of risk factors driven by poverty, which influence and amplify one another, threatening the psyche and further exacerbating economic hardship. The analysis conducted reveals the effectiveness of integrated interventions combining healthcare, educational, and socio-economic actions, as these mitigate the effects of economic distress and enable individuals to break free from the vicious cycle of poverty.
