This thesis examines the relationship between musical training and short-term memory, with particular attention to differences between musicians and non-musicians. Through a critical review of the experimental literature – including behavioral studies and recent meta-analyses – the aim is to examine whether musical training, as an independent variable, is associated with an enhancement of memory abilities and to what extent these effects manifest in different memory domains, particularly phonological (verbal), tonal (musical), and visual memory. Musical practice, understood as a complex cognitive activity integrating auditory perception, attention, motor coordination, and memory, represents an ideal context for investigating the link between environmental stimulation and brain plasticity. The scientific literature reviewed indicates that musicians tend to show a significant advantage in short-term memory compared to non-musicians, particularly in tasks involving tonal sequences (musical stimuli) and, to a moderate extent, in verbal tasks (phonological memory). However, the data related to visual memory are more limited or not significant, suggesting that the cognitive benefits of music might not extend uniformly across all domains.
Questa tesi compilativa analizza il rapporto tra formazione musicale e memoria a breve termine, con particolare attenzione alle differenze tra musicisti e non musicisti. Mediante una rassegna critica della letteratura sperimentale – inclusi studi comportamentali e recenti meta-analisi, l’obiettivo è esaminare se l’allenamento musicale, come variabile indipendente, sia associato a un potenziamento delle capacità mnemoniche e in quale misura questi effetti si manifestino nei diversi domini della memoria, in particolare fonologica (verbale), memoria tonale (musicale) e visiva. La pratica musicale, intesa come attività cognitiva complessa che integra percezione uditiva, attenzione, coordinazione motoria e memoria, rappresenta un contesto ideale per indagare il legame tra stimolazione ambientale e plasticità cerebrale. La letteratura scientifica esaminata indica che i musicisti tendono a mostrare un vantaggio significativo nella memoria a breve termine rispetto ai non musicisti, in particolare nei compiti che coinvolgono sequenze tonali (stimoli musicali) e, in misura moderata, anche in quelli verbali (memoria fonologica); tuttavia, i dati relativi alla memoria visiva sono più contenuti o non significativi e indicano che i benefici cognitivi della musica potrebbero non estendersi in modo uniforme a tutti i domini.
