Over the past few decades, the rabbit has assumed an increasingly prominent role as a companion animal, in addiction to its traditional use as a livestock animal. This transformation has introduced new challenges concerning management, welfare, and the understanding of the species’ ethological requirements. The present thesis seeks to examine the principal behavioral and ethological characteristics of the domestic rabbit, with the objective of fostering more informed management practices among owners. Through careful observation of behavioral cues and the adaptation of both environment and diet to the species’ actual needs, it is possible to prevent conditions of stress and discomfort, thereby enhancing the quality of human–animal coexistence and promoting the establishment of a strong and meaningful bond.

Abstract
Over the past few decades, the rabbit has assumed an increasingly prominent role as a companion animal, in addiction to its traditional use as a livestock animal. This transformation has introduced new challenges concerning management, welfare, and the understanding of the species’ ethological requirements. The present thesis seeks to examine the principal behavioral and ethological characteristics of the domestic rabbit, with the objective of fostering more informed management practices among owners. Through careful observation of behavioral cues and the adaptation of both environment and diet to the species’ actual needs, it is possible to prevent conditions of stress and discomfort, thereby enhancing the quality of human–animal coexistence and promoting the establishment of a strong and meaningful bond.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
