This study analyzes the economic and financial performance of 277 dairy companies located in mountain and lowland areas, with the aim of assessing animal welfare through the financial analysis of the two types of farming systems. The discriminating factor used to classify the companies is the level of attention paid to animal welfare, considered as a key indicator of corporate sustainability. The analysis focuses on the period 2019–2023 and examines the main economic indicators: ROA, ROI, ROS, EBITDA, and revenue. Company data were sourced from the AIDA database, while contextual information on the Italian dairy market was obtained from ISMEA sources. The purpose of the research is to verify whether investments in animal welfare—often perceived by entrepreneurs as an additional cost—can instead represent a strategic asset capable of generating value, both in economic terms and in terms of product quality. The study aims to demonstrate that a business model oriented toward sustainability and animal care is not only compatible with profitability, but can also contribute to the competitive strengthening of dairy enterprises.
