The quality of the parent-child relationship and parenting practices play a crucial role in the development of emotional competence, i.e. the ability to recognise, understand and regulate one's own and others' emotions. In children with ADHD and ODD, who often show difficulties in emotional regulation, a sensitive, consistent and supportive parenting style can be a key protective factor. The present study aimed to investigate the relationship between emotional competence in a sample of 52 children and adolescents diagnosed with ADHD and/or ODD and in a control group of similar age, gender and cognitive functioning. The variables of interest were investigated using self and proxy report instruments. Based on the literature, it is hypothesised that positive parenting is associated with better emotional competence, particularly in the clinical group. Results and clinical implications will be discussed in the contribution.
