Stress is a fundamental psychophysiological response that enables the organism to adapt to environmental demands. However, its effects can be either adaptive or maladaptive depending on the intensity and duration of the stress response, as well as on the individual's cognitive appraisal of the stressful event. This thesis examines the evolution of the concept of stress through the main theoretical models, with particular attention to the distinction between eustress and distress and their impact on psychological, physiological, and cognitive functioning. Starting from the pioneering work of Hans Selye, the thesis explores the contributions of Richard Lazarus and Susan Folkman on cognitive appraisal and coping, as well as Bruce McEwen's model of allostasis and allostatic load. It then investigates the relationship between stress and performance, focusing on the effects of stress on cognitive functions, motivation, and attention, while integrating the Yerkes–Dodson law with more recent neuroscientific findings. Finally, the thesis reviews the main evidence-based strategies for stress management, including mindfulness, relaxation techniques, physical activity, and cognitive-behavioral interventions, highlighting their role in promoting psychophysiological well-being. The analysis of the literature suggests that stress should not be regarded solely as a pathological condition but rather as a dynamic process whose outcomes depend on the interaction of biological, psychological, and environmental factors.

Abstract

Stress as a resource and risk: the role of eustress and distress in psychophysiological well-being and performance
