Narrative competence is a complex linguistic variable, involving numerous language components and cognitive resources. Recently, research has begun to investigate narrative competence in bilingual children, highlighting the need for further exploration in this field of study. The aim of this thesis is to investigate quantitatively (a) and qualitatively (b) the influence of certain factors within the family learning context on the narrative competence of bilingual children in Italy, with multiple L1s and L2 Italian, during the preschool and early elementary school years. The study involved 54 bilingual children exposed to various L1s in their home environment. Their narrative skills in Italian were assessed using the MAIN (Multilingual Assessment Instrument for Narratives), while families were interviewed to understand the educational practices adopted at home. The main objectives of this work are twofold: to analyze the influence of acculturation orientation in multicultural families on exposure to the native language (L1) at home, and to explore how specific factors in the home educational environment may affect the narrative skills, both in language comprehension and production, of bilingual children.
