This work aims to analyze the characteristics of development in Down Syndrome (DS), with particular attention to motor, cognitive, linguistic, and socio-emotional areas, and then delve into the JASPER model (Joint Attention, Symbolic Play, Engagement & Regulation), originally developed for autism spectrum disorders (ASD), evaluating its theoretical principles, modes of application, and empirical evidence. The main objective is to explore the potential of JASPER as an early intervention tool for children with DS, taking into account its characteristics of flexibility, individualization, and the enhancement of strengths such as symbolic play and socialization. The pilot study by Engelstand et al. (2024) is presented and discussed, which showed improvements in joint engagement and the use of interactive strategies based on JASPER by caregivers. Despite methodological limitations (small sample, adaptations due to the pandemic, assessment tools that are not always optimal), the results suggest the potential usefulness of this approach to promote social, communicative and emotional skills in children with DS. The research highlights the need for further longitudinal studies and larger samples to validate and consolidate the effectiveness of the model in this population, with a view to early and resource-centered intervention.
